overcome

sadness
it comes to you
every so often
baring its teeth and sinking its claws into your skin
until you bleed all over the floor
your blood the taste of iron
and the salt of your tears.
sometimes so unexpected
it knocks you off your feet,
sucks the air out of you,
sometimes a lingering
dull pain
you can never forget.

fear
it creeps up to you in the dark,
makes you want to crawl into a hole
and never come out
never see daylight again.
sometimes it
feels like
fear is everything,
all-encompassing,
and other times,
it just feels like something
you have to live with.

regret
it slithers into your bones like a snake,
resting there like a rock
at the bottom of a
deep
dark pond.
you would drown trying to
remove it
trying to fix
the unfixable.
sometimes, regret
becomes a part of life.
eventually.
not always.

feelings like these
they haunt, they hurt
they create your darkest moments
moments when you don't know if you will
laugh or
smile or
truly live again.

but
no matter how
sad or
fearful or
regretful
you feel,

promise
that
you will
laugh
and smile
and live
again.
because we are strong.

and we are made to overcome.

She has just showered, and her hair hangs limp down her back, washed of the shampoo she waited five minutes, forehead against the cool tile wall, to rinse off. The sky is ink and charcoal, but then, it has been for hours.

  • What lingers?

I found this vignette in a notebook from summer 2024 and thought it was worth sharing. I have no memory of writing it, but I'm glad I did.
