Joy Harjo
A member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, award-winning poet and musician Joy Harjo was the 23rd United States Poet Laureate (2019-22). She has written 10 books of poetry, as well as plays, children's books, and two memoirs. Harjo often draws on the experience of her ancestors and the inspiration of the natural world around her for her beautiful and elegant writing. Harjo, who was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she lives today, is also a musician and performer. She has won many awards, including Yale University Library's 2023 Bollingen Prize for American Poetry for her book Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light: Fifty Poems for Fifty Years and for her lifetime achievement in and contributions to American poetry.
