Hungary

Defenders of democracy are cheering the landslide defeat of Hungary's prime minister Viktor Orban after 16 years of autocratic rule. What message can Americans take from this historic election?

With a record turnout in the April 12 election, Péter Magyar led his Tisza Party to victory, promising an end to the corruption of Orban's government. Favored by both the Trump administration and the Kremlin, Orban was seen as a model for MAGA and right-wing populists around the world. Vice President JD Vance traveled to Hungary in an unsuccessful bid to rally support for Orban. This defeat has implications for the global nationalist revival promoted by Trump, the war in neighboring Ukraine, and European security.
