The New Girl.

I walked away from that house as fast as I could, my heart racing like an Olympic track star. I had only been there a few minutes, but that was enough to ensure I would never go back. When the new girl at my school sat next to me in science, I was exalted! I was so excited to make a new friend, that I barely even notice that the color of her eyes was a deep crimson that seemed to glow from her pale face. Her name was Alice, and when I asked her what her last name was, she answered simply: “Oh…I don’t have one. My parents do, but It’s hard to pronounce, so we just use our first names.” I guess that made sense.  I invited her to sit with my friends at lunch that day. After all, she seemed very nice and we had sat together for all of our classes that day, talking about typical high school things. That afternoon, I was pretty surprised when Alice invited me over to her house to work on the science project together.  At this point, I had been listening to my other friends complain about how weird she was, saying that there was something off about the redness of her eyes and her soup. I brushed them off, but I couldn't help from feeling more and more uneasy as the day went on. I turned to tell her I had plans, but when we came face to face, I saw how her eyes were wide with anticipation, and I could tell she was using every ounce of courage she had to overcome her shy manner. I remembered what it was like when I moved to this district three years ago, and instantly took pity on her.

“Sure! I would love to” I replied, with my best fake smile.
The house was unlike any I'd ever seen before. It was tall and painted a pale brown, with dark black shutters that gave it a dungeon-like presentation. It stood tall, atop an even taller hill. It was long and crooked, like a witch's finger pointing up at the sky. At first glance, the inside of the house looked like any other…But certain things stood out the more you looked around. Family pictures…In front of big caves or foggy graveyards. Coat hooks with name tags…Only bearing long black cloaks and big-rimmed hats. Even the chandelier hanging in the foyer appeared at first to be adorned with little white pearls. However, and maybe it was just my imagination, some of the pearls looked suspiciously like teeth.
We walked into the kitchen, and I could feel my hands start to sweat. When Alic opened the fridge to grab a drink, I could have sworn I saw a jug of mysterious red liquid hidden behind the milk.

“Do you want anything to drink? We have soda and juice and…”

“No thanks! I'm ok!” I cut Alice off. There was no way I was going to consume anything from this creepy place.

I could feel my stomach doing backflips as we sat down at the oddly large dining room table. I excused myself to go to the bathroom, where I could hopefully convince myself that I was just being crazy.
Alice pointed me down a long, plain hallway that was so narrow it felt like it was shrinking as I walked down. I finished washing my hands, and slowly looked up, getting ready to give myself a reassuring pep talk. What I saw next…or more what I didn't see next, sent me into a panic. I stood there, in front of the bathroom sink, staring straight ahead, and staring back at me was nothing but a blank wall. Suddenly, it felt like the extremely large toothbrushes and dark-colored towels were jumping out at me, screaming at me to run. I quickly shuffled back into the kitchen, formulating a plan in my head.

“Umm… Alice, I'm sorry but I just remembered I have to watch my little brother this afternoon, so I should get home.” I stammered nervously to Alice, her back turned to me.

“Oh…ok. That's too bad.” I heard a class clink down on the counter as she spoke. “You can come over another time to get that project done.” Alice turned slowly as she spoke, revealing the trail of crimson running down the side of her mouth, matching the color sitting in her cup. A small smirk pulled at the corners of her pale lips.

“But be careful on your way out. We have lots of sharp things…I wouldn't want you to get a cut.”
