When the children of America go to school,
We expect them to come back.
We expect them to run up from the bus stop,
Keychains jingling,
Mouth filled with stories about their day.
What we do not expect
Is a phone call.
“Our deepest condolences-
your child has passed from this earth.”
No words
No cards
No flowers
Can console a family’s pain
A pain so ripping,
It feels like your heart is about to
Burst
A pain so internal
No one else could possibly
Understand
It’s the second amendment, they say.
It’s our right, they say.
What do they say about this?
19 children’s lives snuffed out
Along with 2 teachers-
21 in total.
21 human beings
That will never see their parents
Grandparents
Cousins
Aunts
Uncles
And pets
Ever again
21 human beings
Whose parents
Grandparents
Cousins
Aunts
Uncles
And pets
Will never see again
I pray for those who lost someone,
As well for those who have been lost.
And for the rest of us,
We must understand
And embrace the change that is
Needed.
This must never happen again.
We expect them to come back.
We expect them to run up from the bus stop,
Keychains jingling,
Mouth filled with stories about their day.
What we do not expect
