Summer Began Today

Summer truly has begun
even though the calendar says
it's spring for four more weeks

Today was the day
the seasons changed
and spring did turn to summer

When I woke up this morning
it was cold and it was crisp
not summer yet
still springtime

But as the day progressed
and the sun climbed up the sky
it became clear to me
that spring was coming to a close

The earth spun
turning our faces toward the sun
heating up this frozen land
with it's burning rays

My mom had to mow the lawn
and roaring of the mower
ushered in the new season

Up and down the street
I hear the sounds of mowers
revving and roaring and sputtering
and it felt like summer

All the flowers on the trees
burst in to bloom
and the dandelions turned
from blazing yellow suns 
to fluffy white clouds

The pollen in the air is
almost tangible
and it isn't that hot 
but for a northern girl
it feels like it's a hundred degrees

I'm wearing shorts and a tank top
and I'm sweating a lot
so my siblings and I get out the sprinkler 
and jump through the freezing water

And now we're shivering
our teeth are chattering
but at least we're laughing

We've only got two weeks
of schooling left
and then summer break
officially begins

And even though we're
stuck at home
it still feels like summer

We'll still have summer
because
the earth keeps turning
and nothing will stop that
just hold on

It won't the summer of our lives
at least not the one we planned
it'll still be memorable
but not for the reasons we wanted

But summer
will turn into fall
just like spring
turned into summer
and we'll survive somehow
it'll be okay

Hold on tight now
it's gonna be
the summer of our lives
