Tempest

She twirls
arms outstretched

Papers flutter to the floor
swept from the desk
by her tempest

The storm becomes ferocious
dislodging larger things
an empty cup
a tube of lip gloss
and a picture in a frame

The picture hits the floor
and stops the spinning girl
she trips
and falls
and then she crawls
to the fallen picture frame

A giant crack
in the picture's glass
separates a girl
and a boy
the girl is smiling
she is young
and unprepared
for the coldness of the world
she is the twirling girl
from the years before

The boy smiles also
his arm around the girl
and like the girl
he is young
and does not know
how hard life sometimes is
he is a memory
the twirling girl tries to forget

A tear falls
onto the broken glass
a single tear
so pure
so heartbreaking
so full of regret
a reminder
that she will never forget

She picks up the picture
and sets it aside
safely out of the way
and then
she lifts her arms
above her head
and begins to spin
twirling away the pain
becoming a storm again

The wind blows
and the rain flies
and her hair whips around
and around
and around
