When I was younger, I was told
That if you eat the seeds of a watermelon
One grows in your stomach.
A tsunami of panic flooded my veins
Knowing something would grow in me as I ate.
I imagined what it would be like with a watermelon in my stomach.
How they're an enormous smooth oval
That consumes the fridge's space.
With a watermelon in my stomach
It would be difficult to race.
I wouldn't be able to walk
The watermelon would weigh me down.
The watermelon must weigh at least one thousand pounds!
I wouldn't be able to eat
The watermelon would take up too much room.
No more cereal or ice cream
Oh, I would be doomed!
Would my stomach be able to hold it in?
No, it would not.
My stomach would burst like a firework
I would be dead on the spot.
Now that I'm older
I know I will not grow a weed.
I laugh knowing I believed
The lie of the watermelon seeds.

darla
poor little Darla
stuck in a war that was already fought
a chandelier mine shattered
for she was bought by a man
a man who poured hope in her glass
and killed her with doubt
a man who toasted to happiness -

Listen as Everest speaks
Oh, why must my bitter cold soul devour my box of warmth,
my murderous, snow-white hair pointing north?
The hikers that dare set foot on my icy ridges,
they shall burn you like scolding, lava-like bridges.
