A Year in Vermont

January:

Crisp cold days

Early morning ski races

I almost mowed the lawn last year

Still very dark in the mornings

February:

It’s like January.

March:

My birthday

The long stretch between

February and April break,

Spring skiing and big snowstorms

Days in the late 30s

Ski racing states

April:

The snow starts disappearing

A few buds start popping out on the trees and from the ground

The grass starts gathering a teeny bit of color

Dirt roads with ruts so deep,

They scrape the bottom of the car,

And we slide every which way

May:

Short sleeved shirts outside again

Lacrosse

With flowers kicking off the summer,

Poking through the ground announcing the arrival of warmth

The last snow melts from the big banks it once was

June:

The pool opens

School ends

Days in the mid 70s

With short clear nights

Where all of the stars are brightly visible

July:

Fireworks

Cool drinks

Swimming

Sunscreen

Thunderstorms

Rainy or not at all

Stereotypically summer

August:

Hot

A lot of sun

Anticipation of school

September:

School and soccer start

Shorts every day

Hot school building

The grass is either green or brown

Keep forgetting to mow the lawn

October:

Pumpkins and pumpkin spice

Halloween

Nights start to get cooler

Excitement for the holidays and winter

The time when I really start to observe consumerism

November:

Many friends' birthdays

Hoping for snow

Either really warm or cold,

It varies day to day

Dry land training

Thanksgiving

Audi FIS Stifel Killington World Cup

December:

Advent calendars

Counting down the days to Christmas

Ski season starts again

So much time with my friends

Watching if it is going to snow or rain

Thick snow sticking to the trees

Winter break

Skiing every day

Hot cocoa and marshmallows

Then it’s New Years
