I Am a Tree

I am a tree,
my roots are grounded and enriched within the dirt.
I am a tree,
with bark surrounding my naked caramel-colored wood,
with every mark and texture are woven around my body.
I am a tree,
with a mane of emerald leaves,
that generate a light no human can create.
I am a tree,
with fruit that thrives within the citrine sun.
I am a tree,
I produce air for the world around me.
In a way, it is my way to say thank you,
to help others around me by using my gifts.

And yet,
The past is no longer alive.
For others with power come,
Wiping away
my brothers,
my sisters,
my family.
One by one,
cut,
burned,
destroyed.
But I am a tree,
I can not move,
I can not speak,
I can not scream nor weep.

I am a tree,
With leaves no more,
with wounds around my bark.
But yet I shall use my gifts that remain,
for I am the only one left.
