Training

The ski bends
and releases
pushing me down
the hill
faster and faster
the gates
THWACK
down onto the snow
a rhythm of movement
a dance
where only the legs move
and the upper body
stays quiet
heart and gates
pounding to the
same beat.

First Race of The Year

We file off the bus
Talking and laughing nervously
Here we are
At a different school
Looking around at the
Other teams warming up
We try to gauge the competion
Is that skier in the middle school division, do you think?
Oh my gosh, if she is, we're
dead
The JV girls pretend not to care
But they glance over at the other skiers

Racing

My nerves are racing
faster than I will
as I stand
in the start gate
"Ready?" the starter asks
"Go!"
I push through the wand
skate, push, pass the first gate
Crap turn
Outside ski pressure
forward forward forward
Crap hairpin
I'm okay, I'm good, I'm doing good
Under gate, reset
I'm getting a good rhythm

This is really great. I can really feel the movement in this; it captures skiing perfectly. The descriptions give it a rhythmic feel, while still maintaining that motion and speed that comes with skiing.

Wow, this just feels like I'm right there with you. I love skiing, and although I have never raced downhill, I know how this feels.
