Thee Clever City

Long long ago, there was a kingdom led by a very vain and proud king. He held control over several cities in his area. One of these cities was known for its ingenious and skillful people. They denounced the king for being egoistic and cruel, and expressly claimed that they would no longer be a part of his kingdom. They said that they would build an immense wall around their territory. The other people knew that this would definitely irk their king and it did indeed. The result was almost instantaneous. The king accused them of  libel, he declared war on them. The king and his men besieged the wall soon after. The city started to worry since they had never trained in combat. They started to forsake hope. They went to a wise girl in their village for help. She gave them a plan, The people had their misgivings about the plan, but it was the only plan they had.
They opened the gate and quickly receded into their houses. The king came in and saw a man in simple apparel pouring water out of a well. The king grabbed him and asked him what he was doing. The man said that the moon had fallen in the well last night, and that he was trying to get it out. After a moment of thinking, he realized that the man had mistaken the reflection of the moon in the well for the actual moon. The king laughed at his innocence and let the man go. The king then dispatched his soldiers and told them to round up any intelligent person that they find.

The king was walking until it became evening and the sky was turning scarlet. He then saw another man throwing water into the sky. He asked the man what he was doing. The man answered that the sky was on fire, so he was dousing the sky. He said that the sky always catches fire at this time of day and he always extinguished it. The king realized that he thought the evening sky was fire. The king laughed and left him alone. The king soon regrouped with the soldiers. They had no one with them.

When the king questioned why, they replied that they couldn’t find a single intelligent man in the city. The king wondered why everyone thought they possessed a gainful skill. He realized that they would all be famished because they were so inept. The king was amused by their innocence and took a liking to them. The king ordered his soldiers to invite them for a repast in his palace. After dinner the people of the city went back to their houses and praised the girl for her idea. Every time they remembered this incident, they always couldn’t stop their laughter.
