We were all gathered around the campfire the night before Halloween just like we have been doing every year since we were in fifth grade when the storm came out of nowhere. We ran to the little cabin on the other side of the clearing laughing all the way there. We all got dried off and into some new clothes. We all did our own thing Rebecca went to her room so did Josh and Miles. I stayed downstairs to read and sit by the fire.
Everyone had been asleep for about an hour or two when the storm ended so I decided that I would try and get some sleep. I heard something outside like footsteps walking up the old wooden steps to the little porch on the side of the house. Just then the screen door creaked open and slammed shut. Just the wind. Again I heard the footsteps. This time like they were closer maybe in the house. But I had locked the doors hadn’t I? No!!! The lock on the side screen door didn’t work but I was the only one that knew that and everyone else was upstairs asleep. There was a crash in the little kitchen at the bottom of the stairs. Then the third step to the top of the stairs, the one that always creaks. It creaked and then Rebecca’s scream.
About ten seconds later Josh ran to the top of the stairs and a gun went off. I Ran for the door as I did I met Miles coming around the side of the house.
“Run get out of here or we will end up like the others and we are to young to die. Run.”
We ran to our cars but the tires were flat. Someone had this planned out well we ran for cover in the woods but who ever was after us wasn’t far behind us. I could hear the third breath and then Miles pushed me sharp to the left into the bushes. But the killer wasn’t stupid they knew there way around the woods. There was no way that we were going to get out of here alive.
We ran and we ran we got ot the edge of the woods and they weren’t behind us so we took a break. Miles went back into the woods to see if the person was still coming.
“Run Sandra. Run get away from here. Go get some help.” Yelled Miles.
As I ran I looked back over my shoulder just as the gun went off one last time I saw Miles shadow drop to the ground and lay there still. I stood there shocked and didn’t move listening to the last words that Miles said so I ran. I ran the ten miles to town. Crying and stumbling the whole way there.
Two Years later
I finally got the courage back to come back up here after two years, and a three month investigation. When the cops came back the bodies were gone and there was no trace of blood. I had only gotten one look at the ugly face but I was so frightened that if I said something I might get killed so I didn’t say anything. That’s why I’m up here to see if I can build enough courage so that I can maybe find the man who killed my friends.
So I’m up here sitting on the dock thinking through that night over and over? If I had fixed the lock on the door would he have come? If I had shown my face first could I have saved three lives instead of one? Should I have woken everyone when I heard the footsteps? All these question and I will never have the answers.
