The history of love poems:
I promised myself
that I would not be
the girl who writes
love poems
on the back of her palm,
as I scribbled three
simple words
on the inside cover
of a book, -
What Van Gogh and I have in common:
I spent 13 hours
with a needle and thread
and 15 thousand colors
and cloth made of clouds
I spent 13 hours painting the night sky
into an old t shirt -
What 14 years looks like:
sometimes I breathe in
and forget to breathe out
again
do you remember the night
the sun never set
we caught it
and held it in our hands
and woke up tasting honey -
The sound of three short breaths:
I think I broke
my own heart too
I felt it crack
before the pieces fell
into my stomach
now I have nothing
behind my sternum
and it hurts
the nothing pulling -
the sound of telephone lines:
I broke your heart
today
it poured out of your eyes
and down your cheeks
as you threw words at me
like bricks through windowpanes
breaking me a little more
each time -
Note To self:
how do I explain
how it feels to fall together
how every step I take
is fueled by doubt and
heartbreak
the sky opened up
in my chest and suffocated
