Alone, not Lonely

I know Loneliness well—
he's a great friend of mine;
when others leave,
he's there.
Staring back at me.
His presence suffocates me.
Like fog over London,
he's here often.
Sometimes I can feel him in my heart.
A heavy weight.

Sometimes I wish for a different friend.
Alone.
When others leave,
she's there.
Smiling back at me.
Her presence leaves me content.
Like freshly baked cookies,
I adore her.
Sometimes I can feel her in my heart.
A lighter weight.

I wish I were Alone, not Lonely.

  • a flutter

    i stand

    close my eyes

    make a wish

    and fall

the flashing and blinding lights blur around me

as tears slip out of my eyes

an ant in an elephant city

    ---

    a flutter

    a flurry

  • Sleep

a never-ending stream of consciousness pours out

from the moment the sky brightens

to the moment the world darkens

    and then

    nothing

    the waters finally calming

the overflowing dam letting down its walls
