Being the Knowing Tree

I am the Knowing Tree. I see all. I know all.

I see the humans.

I was once a human.
Now I am not.

It’s probably a good thing, though.

Humans are complex.
Emotions rambling and jumping around.

They love us trees but then they cut us down mercilessly.

As a human, I loved trees.

But I still didn’t do enough

To stop their pain.

As a human I loved nature.

I loved figuring out puzzles.

Yet why couldn’t I figure out the greatest puzzle of all;

Why?

Why what, you ask?

Why this?

Why don’t humans realize trees are just as alive as themselves?

I lied.

I don’t know all.
I don’t know the answers to these questions.

I guess I’m more of the Thinking Tree.

That’s okay, though.

I guess that’s one thing my human self and I had in common.

It's quiet. Just the rumbling of the car. My friend is asleep next to me, their head on my shoulder. I open the windows. The breeze is nice and cool and rustles my hair. As soon as the window is open, it reveals the sound of crickets.

  • Dear Canada

    Dear Canada,

You do not belong to us.

    You never have.

And I really, really hope you never will.

You are your own country, but I know I don’t have to tell you that.

    You already know it.
