Dear America,
I guess I should thank you.
For opening my eyes
For opening my mind
my heart
my soul
my body.
I’ve always thought of myself as patriotic
but now
would I die for my country?
would I bleed for my country?
would I give my life over to my country?
probably not
because let me ask you America
what have you ever done for us?
I would die for the American people
I would bleed for the American people
I would give my life over for the American people
but I would never give up anything for you, America.
The country who is refusing people at our borders
Seperating families
Using up our resources
Grid locking our democracy
Sometimes it hurts to be a white American
Knowing that I have this safety
this privilege
this power
and I can’t guarentee that for everyone
but I have to fight for people to see
You, America are like an ocean
Pleasant under one leader
And roaring under the other
I guess I should thank you.
For opening my eyes
For opening my mind
my heart
my soul
my body.
I’ve always thought of myself as patriotic
but now
would I die for my country?
would I bleed for my country?
would I give my life over to my country?
probably not
