Excerpt from Power of Fire (work-in-progress book, ch.2)

A cold blast of wind whipped across my face. Trees almost ten stories high towered over me as I climbed up the snow-covered hillside, a cloak of fur wrapped tightly around my shoulders.
Ahead of me, through the forest, I could see the woman I was following. She was very tall and dressed in black from head to foot, except her arms, which were long and white and swayed eerily at her sides as she ran, almost like a pair of snakes. Her hair was black and hung down past her waist, wild and untamed.
I hurried after her, a little faster, trying to keep her in my sight as the hill suddenly sloped upward and the icy wind ripped across it, howling furiously in my ears. I ducked my head and pulled the cloak tighter around me, then heard the trees above me creak dangerously. I shivered. If even one of them fell, the path was so narrow and steep that I would almost certainly be killed; but the woman, running away from me with her long hair flying around her, wasn't looking at the trees.
She was tearing up the hill as fast as she could go, and I knew that I would have to follow her. I couldn't let her get away. Breaking into a run, I rushed after her, feeling my hair slapping across my back as flurries of snow rained down on me, soaking into my skin. Ahead, the trees were beginning to thin out, and as I burst out onto the top, the full force of the cruel wind hit me. I let out a strangled gasp as the icy gale tore over my already drenched body, and glanced around through the snow, trying to catch a glimpse of the tall woman in the black cloak. She was gone........
