I Remember

I remember
the first time I saw it,
the sun beating down on my face.
The other kids laughing and playing to their heart's content
brings a smile to my face

I remember
the blankets and the ridiculously colored bikinis,
the sand in my toes,
the waves crashing down,
the sound they produce ever so satisfying to my young ears.

I remember
the pastel-blue skies,
the fluffy clouds,
all shaped like animal crackers,
making me hungry every second I looked at them.

I remember
the kites soaring alongside the pearl-white seagulls,
the caws of those birds filling the sky,
the coolness of the water.
It somehow gives me warmth on the inside.

I remember
my first day at the ocean.

    Golden.

    Glistening in the sunlight.

The smooth, metallic surface felt too fine to touch.

Like a perfectly formed apple, round and shiny

As small as a dollar coin.

Though it weighed much more than you’d think
