I Wish I Was A Lighthouse Keeper

I wish I was a lighthouse keeper.
I would sit in my tower at the edge of the sea and watch the world go by.
I would sing to myself 'twixt the gray barren rocks and  sit solemnly under the sky
I would eat vegetables brought over from the shore and drink my tea from a mug
I would dip my toes in the cold, blowing water and on land I wouldn't t dare lub
I would stay on my island through storm and through strife
I would be buried on it at the end of my life
Not at all alone, though without husband or wife.
And so it would be, just me and the sea,
And the lighthouse that I'd work to keep.

Author's note: I recently found out that a school that I loved sold their camp in the Adirondacks, where I have many fond memories. This grief inspired some writing, which I have posted below.

  • Bells

Once, on a fine September Tuesday when the air was bright and clear, every bell in the world rang at once. They didn’t play a song. There was no melody. Just one collective ring.
