If dogs were free 

If dogs were free, what would they do?

Run for office? Form a chewing shoe coup?

Would they frolic with purpose, protest with glee, 

Barking slogans like “free the leash! Let us be!”

Would they gather in parks, paws raised to cast a vote,

Argue in circles, nap mid note?

Would they draft constitutions, tails in a bind,

Promising treats for every kind?

Would bias exist? Of course it would, 

Big dogs V small dogs, misunderstood.

Would they act, give speeches to trees,

Deliver dramatic soliloquies

Would they boycott kibble, buy fair trade bones,

Sip oatmeal lattes, scroll on their phones?

If dogs could roam without fences, or pleas,

Sniff every corner and chase every breeze

Then tell me plainly, no growls and no fees

If dogs are free…

Then why aren't we?
