Longing

Is nothing we do ever good enough?

We try, fail

Try again, still fail

Keep trying, eventually succeed

Keep succeeding, get farther with each one

Get to the point where each success barely has an affect

Yet it is still not enough for people

They keep demanding more, expecting more

Each success means you outdid the last one, proving you can go forward

Higher and higher and higher

Until you go as far as you can

Then they look down on you for not meeting their standards

They make you feel like you're letting them down

That you're a disappointment when you've already broken their standards tenfold

They make you feel bad for failing their ideals for you when you have nothing, nothing, to prove; to them, or anyone else

We let them keep this act up because we crave the approval

We as a species long for it

We need to feel like what we accomplished means something to someone other than ourselves

We can't escape that feeling

We can try to mitigate our need for it

But it will never fully go away

a thick carpet on the forest floor.

I feel a light breeze on my skin,
