a love to live for

in the end, there is a person you'd walk through hell for
because you know the fire is worth it.
but death is so common now, don't you think?
teenagers die every day to their own self-destruction,
the forgotten laid to rot in the gutters,
soldiers marching into war still believing in glory.

i would die for you, someone tells me, and I hold their hands and say no.
no, don't die for me. there is too much to die for already.
will you live for me?

death is easy, death is quick,
but living is long and arduous and painful.
i don't mind, though. not if you're in it.
not if life comes with these stars.

    the snake is hungry

    so the snake will eat

and eat it does, chewing, gnawing,

and will you ever notice, little thing,

that it is your own tail

    you are swallowing?

from salt and foam and scales

    steal the hearts of stone

    nacreous shells, dying husks,

    the honey-sweet flesh that once

    clung to its bones

    to die of thirst.

meet me at the end of the world

the space between firestorms and tsunamis

    across the acid oceans

    and here, where the rot

has begun to reclaim the cities at last.
