My mom's friend Maria
La mariposa she says
Soy la mariposa
Because she spread her wings
To the land of kings
Her name was Maria

But they took her away
They took la mariposa away
Bound her wings, threw her down
“Go back to your dirty town”
She flies through the sun
Wings spiral beat bright blue sky
Nothing stays the same
“You don’t like who you are?
You don’t have to be her anymore”
Her brown eyes
wide
and the sparkle went out
And ships sailed
To and from the port and
Her brown eyes were
red
You wrote a poem about me
It wasn’t very good
You said I made you a tortured poet
Then laughed
And it’s all a blur-
Isn’t it
