neverland

take me to Neverland, Peter Pan,
take me to a place where i don't have to grow up.

pirates will chase me, fairies will bite me,
mermaids will drown me beneath a golden lagoon,
but when is that out of the ordinary?
children walk down their streets in fear, hand-in-hand as though that offers protection,
we learn too early that not everyone means well when they smile.
at least here i can hit back.
i can scream, i can stab, i can face my monsters because here they aren't make-believe.

teach me how to fly, i have always dreamed about it.
let me leave my shadow behind.
neverending games and laughter
forest and wind and sand and sea
i have dreamed of running for a very long time.

let go, Peter.

let go, Neverland.

    the snake is hungry

    so the snake will eat

    and eat it does, chewing, gnawing,

    and will you ever notice, little thing,

    that it is your own tail

    you are swallowing?

    from salt and foam and scales

    steal the hearts of stone

    nacreous shells, dying husks,

    the honey-sweet flesh that once

    clung to its bones

    to die of thirst.

    meet me at the end of the world

    the space between firestorms and tsunamis

    across the acid oceans

    and here, where the rot

    has begun to reclaim the cities at last.
