A Poem Debating America

I'm not here to debate about America

                                                                                 I'm here

                                                                               to talk about

                                                                                     those

                                                                                    who do

                                                                                    debate

                                                                                    America.

                              They make speeches,

                                                                                  and argue

                                                                                     and cry

                                                                                    and write.
                                                 Endlessly,

                                                                          they question it.
What is America? ("Are we a nation of states, what's the state of our nation?")

Who is America? ("I, too, am America.")

What can we change about America? ("... to create a more perfect union.")

Why should we change? ("I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free.")

Yeah. I'm not here to do that.
I'll just write pretty little things,

while my life explodes.
I'll write pretty little things,

while my brain explodes.
I'll write pretty little things,
while my world explodes.

BOOM!

  • What Will It Take?

At parties I sit quiet and calculate my words

I avoid the eyes of guys and stare at my phone.

    After all that hiding,

    dissatisfaction feels like heartburn,

  • Inevitable

    crying over a simple email

the lasts build a lump in my throat

    last time beaming onstage

    signing yearbooks

    wearing a stiff blue skirt

  • Battle Cries

One girl’s lanky frame against the dark turf field,

    lit up by fluorescent lights

    She saunters toward the building
