Toxic Dynamics

Friends come and go.

Some may say like the seasons turn,

but that metaphor's not strong enough for me.

Friendships are like children's toys.

Friends come and go.

A child gets a new toy; gives it a name.

Pushes aside all of the old toys to let in the new.

The new is exciting and undamaged.

Friends come and go.

Lili's new doll is all she thinks about.

She obsesses and plays with it.

Soon enough, the new becomes old.

Friends come and go.

Next year, a new doll is delivered.

Lili's new obsession.

Out with the old, in with the new.

Friends come and go,

but it's my own selfish patterns that make them do so.

Cling and obsess until the new and unbroken

becomes torn and shattered, then discarded.
