We Shall Become Beacons of Hope

We were once one

With the trees, a

Cell which would come to

Sprout, to birth, to

Hatch us all: the

Life that breathes

The world, and

We are so good

At seeing beauty in nature, in

The brilliant creatures apart

From us, so why

Can’t we find it in us to

See the beauty in ourselves, the

Rest of humanity?  Why

Is it that we can’t love

The beings who evolved just

The same as we did, who

Fight just the same as we do, just

In a different place, in

A different language we speak up

For the same goals, we

Carry the same makeup

Of our hearts, so why

Do we refuse to share air with them when

We so happily breathe alongside

The trees, the

Survivors of our hope we

Shall work to become?

We shall become our own beacons

Of hope, and

Shall see that same light in

All the people we cross.
