Before the World Even Existed

She imagines the universe,

the world suspended in midair.

Before, nothing except possibility even existed.

The Milky Way, Earth, evolution–shimmer and dematerialize.

Water and fertile soil and seeds flicker and vanish.

Chemistry, biology, the arts–phantoms of a different generation.

All that remains is time.

To create the whole wide world you need a poem

full of flesh, blood, and bone.

*I used the Cut-up Method to create this poem. All words, including the title, are taken from the book The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

    9:30 pm,

    an unfinished assignment,

    a deadline due.

My weary chest heaves a heavy breath.
