You stand in a field
The sky darkening
Whatever respect or optimism you had for this world
Long gone
A burning feeling courses through your veins
And into your eyes
A tear rolls down your cheek
And falls into the soft grass below.
Breath.
Zoom in
An ant carries a leaf
10 times its size
Through the treacherous journey
That is the sidewalk.
Finally, it makes it home
And finds peace in the constant work of the day.
Zoom out
A squirrel, scampering frantically
Tree to tree
Gathering and storing food
For the coming winter
Frequently returning to a single oak
With a large hole in its trunk
It's pups curled up in the soft mess
Of moss and fur and love
Zoom out
A young rabbit
Bouncing around a forest glade
It's tiny nose twitching
As it begins to nibble on a dandelion.
It's large, innocent, brown eyes
Scanning the field
For the flash of copper that means
Run
Zoom out
An amber fox
Stalks the edge of the woods
It's ribs visible beneath it's skin
Although spring,
A season of bounty
It hadn't had a successful hunt in weeks
It's sharp eyes catch sight
Of a cottontail
And it grins
Knowing the hunger is over
Zoom out
A songbird sings,
Darting every which way through the trees,
As it revels in the wonder and color that is life
It's melody carrying on the wind
To the ears of every creature nearby
As proof that the bird still lives
Zoom out
High up, an eagle soars above the clouds,
the carcass of an innocent shrew in its talons,
as it flies home to feed its young.
It's yellow eyes scanning below,
Just in case a larger meal could be secured.
Zoom out
Above earth, the moon orbits
Like always,
Comforting the shores and commanding the tides
She has never left
Because if she did, who would light the night skies?
Zoom out
Stars, many, many miles away
Form shapes and stories
And lives and loves and losses
Stars that have been around
longer than the oldest tree or the tallest mountain
Stars that have seen empires rise and fall
Zoom out
a gaping dark abyss
Void of everything but a silent peace
Slowly pulls everything towards it
Meteors and moons and planets and stars
Slowly migrating towards its
Slowly drifting towards their end
Zoom in
You lay here,
In the grass,
Staring up into space
Wonder and trust and hope
Coursing through your mind
Wonder about all that has been
All that is
And all that will be
Trust in life
That it will continue doing
The one thing it has always been good at
Preserve
And hope that humanity will continue
Being just as wonderfully human
as it has always been
That it will continue making stories
and art
And reasons to love.
And you take a deep breath
And zoom out again
Letting yourself get lost in the universe
And all it encompasses.
