Here and There

Every drop of oil
Burned
In the multitude of American cars,

Is a drop of water

Drowning
Innocent island homes.

Every re-microwaved cup of coffee,
Is a contribution to a
Record- high heat wave,

In a place
That may not even use electricity.

The disaster television shows
That some endlessly watch
Are
Lived
By others who never picked up a remote.

Should it be
That because some of us
want quick transportation,
Others lose their freedom?

Should some
Enjoy a hot beverage,
while others are deprived
Of the life giving element
Water?

Should the happiness
Here
Cause misery
There?

Well said, Hazel. Thanks for seeing the bigger picture and making us see that our actions do have consequences. You give me hope! We're sending this piece to the Free Press for April 7. Great message.

Thank you so much! The meaning of this piece is definitely about the impacts of our daily life on others, I'm really glad that came across well.

Great! That's my hope for this poem and others, that they will make the reader think and maybe see a different perspective. I'm glad you liked it!
