Fear of Speaking

Do you know the taste of chalk?
Some of you may think the thought disturbing
or just plain disgusting,
but that's what fear tastes like.
Have you ever been tongue-tied?
Many of you have and you have stories,
or maybe you haven't,
but that's what fear does.
Can you make your heart beat faster?
Many of you may think it easy,
or perhaps impossible,
but that's what fear feels like.
Did you scream so silently,
so dryly, that it never escaped you?
Many of you know that feeling,
or not at all,
but that's what fear sounds like.
If words were too much,
like nothing could describe your heart,
would you throw them away?
Many of you would not,
but to those who most certainly would,
fear is your disposal.

  • A Nine-Year Journey

For nine years, I've been a part of YWP and for nine years, I've felt seen by this community. Even as I've grown up, I've watched new young writers come and share their thoughts, emotions, and stories.
  • Beaming writer

In sixth grade, our class had a show-and-tell every week,
and every week, a small handful of students were selected to participate in the next one.
As I was selected, anxiety kicked in.
I wasn't really proud of anything.
  • Love And Embalming

They carried you away in a black hearse.
    Our black eyes,
    beaten and bruised by love,
    caressed your black coffin.
They opened your casket and there you were,
    your eyes closed,
    relaxed and so cold,
and yet you seemed so alive.
