Summer Camp

It was supposed to be a beautiful summer day,

sun shining, birds singing,

but instead of swimming in the lake or shooting archery on the range we are stuck inside

Rain is coming down in buckets out of the sky

Of course, of all days to forget my sweatshirt at home it’s today

One of the unfortunate things about summer in Vermont is it can be 80 one minute and 65 the next and when the rain is pouring down it tends to cool down

There have already been a lot of rainy days at camp so far

and it is not easy to wrangle children who would rather do anything than sit inside

As we are sitting in the lodge kids are running around and being loud,

as kids do

Every once and a while there will come a shout from one of the other counselors to stop yelling or running

Other kids are spread out across the floor

Some are playing card games like Uno or go fish,

others are working on friendship bracelets or lanyards that they got from the art barn

It’s a nice scene,

a change of pace from the action packed days that camp usually has in store

The kids aren’t the only ones making friends

With this rainy day I get the opportunity to get to know my co-workers better

I learn things that were previously unknown

and co-workers become friends

When the rain first came everyone was disappointed

But now a sort of calm has fallen over camp

Until the storm breaks
