I feel as though I'm in a dark cave
with the world burning outside.
I lie here,
listening to adults
debate about the fire.
Does it exist?
Is it really that important?
Is it more important than our economy?

Once upon a scary time
The woody giants thudded to the earth,
The unique creatures died off,
The hurricanes ruined homes and habitats
where animals were once at peace with the earth,
The temperature crept up,

Words
A gift given to us that we speak
of those who have the ability
We use words to express our ongoing love for each other
We use words to dig each other out of complicated moments
with the kindness of our hearts

I pry my eyelids open
the subtle sunshine blinding my eyesight
my mind fogs with numbers 
division and multiplication are not my priority
teachers rant
students yell
assignments roll in

The flickering lights
illuminate the darkness
of our warm and cozy house
the wax melts to the shiny walnut table
drip by drip
the sun fades into the horizon
of the bright green evergreens 
and the hot tones of the maples

Big and tall
strong and sturdy
dependable 365 days a year
your wispy branches with soft green leaves
cover in a sparkling white powdered snow
your branches hunch over the glossy pond
on this crisp December Winter morning
