I think every teenage girl has experienced the feeling of being uncomfortable around a man or a boy.

When I’m foggy and forgotten
And my only hope is escape
I run away
In my mind my suitcase
Is already packed
And I know how to drive
The perfect old red Cadillac 
That sits at the top of the driveway
Waiting for me

The classroom smelled like blackberry pie today

And somebody brought the guitar out

People were talking

And the sky was grey

I was almost okay
 

There's a flower shop in burlington that I drove past everyday last summer

On the sign outside they are always offering a free rose if you have a certain name

One day it was Carol, the next it was Daisy, and the next it was Jim

pressing down on my eyes
I see new shoes
and toystores
the blinding colors of childhood
slowly disappearing

grown out nails
and unwashed hair
covered by perfume
that makes you sparkle

I hum when it rains
and when my hair curls just so into my face
and my sneakers are the perfect amount of dirty
so when the teacher sings
I can pretend the rain on the windows
will carry me away
