All the Silenced Girls

First came the ballgowns and the beheadings.

Six wives of Henry the eighth, and divorce or death were brought upon all but one...

Catherine of Aragon, he loved you, but you failed to produce a son, as the need for masculinity will always surpass compassion.

Beauty is a must, and silence is ideal, for those who dared to speak would suffer the consequences.

Witch trials, witch hunts, all the wicked things for the wicked, wicked women who were a little too loud. Too proud.

If I am not proud of my femininity, than what good am I as a girl? If I'm too bold, too fierce, too strong, then I cannot be normal.

From ballgowns to bikinis, from hiding our bodies to being forced to show them, we have suffered far too long.

If you see my body as a rose to be picked and trimmed and put into a tidy, neat little vase, then I know you'll only use me for your convenience. Be silent, you say. But I won't.

For if my body is a rose, then the thorns will be my anger, and you will suffer my wrath for all the girls who have been silenced.

  • Dear Mother

    Dear Mother,

I have missed you these past few months.

    Where did you go?

I see you standing there, torch held high, yet you do not answer my calls.

  • What Does It Take to See?

What does it take to see the dandelions blooming in the spring, yellow manes bobbing in the wind?

What does it take to see the sun slanting through the windows, to hear the tree frog's chorus in the night?

  • A Tree

I talked to a tree just the other day, I was walking past and it did say,

    Well, what are you?

    Just a traveler.

    But what are you?

Why, a human, of course, you didn’t know?
