butterfly?

you had glitter

spilling out of your mouth

fine as stardust

golden as pollen

falling to the floor

feeding no one

you’re wasting yourself

now all you feel

is emptiness

your cocoon is cracking

baby butterfly

you might not blossom

and for what

your sparkle is slipping

the same sparkle

that lived in your eyes

made them flicker

like a night sky full of fireflies

a jar of restless light, too tight

the same sparkle

that grew from your roots

threaded through your hair

wild as dandelion seeds

drifting down your spine

so your swallowtail wings could grow

and roots grow trees

but you’re snapping your branches

the ladybugs can’t land

now they’re shrinking

folding in like wilted petals

petals that settle

and all because of you

you’re empty

running out of words

dry as fallen leaves

stop grieving

running out of time

so why do you keep talking

like something might still bloom

and bloom

and bloom

and bloom

so keep your broken wings shielded

never learn to fly again

turn away from the sun

no longer cry tears of

honeysuckle and dew

why am i still talking about you

  • cherry blossom

    they arrive like guests

    unannounced

    uninvited

    but welcome

as if they were never gone at all

    soft spoken creatures

    draped in pale pink

    like secrets almost told

    they do not bloom loudly

  • the stranger

    i saw a girl once

laughter and sunshine in her opal eyes

a twitch of a smile almost too brief

hair so unruly as if the wind had made the strands its own

a lankiness to her like branches on the limbs of a tree
