Constellations of Friendship

Hair tucked behind ears,

Cheeks pink and glowing,

Smiles illuminated by the sun,

Weeping willow branches cascading like poetry

Onto fluttered-closed eyelashes;

Laying in overgrown grass

Speckled with star-like wildflowers,

Daydreaming of a sky above

With golden-green leaves falling like stars

Onto the earth on which they dream,

With friends smiling as freckles

Darken on their skin like constellations

They map with verses of poems:

Silly ones they came up with at 2:00 am

After singing the star-spangled banner

And watching a show they still

Haven’t agreed about;

Daydreaming of paint-stamped handprints

Documenting their friendship

And shimmering winter ball dresses

And heels only some of them could walk in;

Daydreaming of our world

Where everything is beautiful

And nothing hurts.
