dear madame president

i hope that you rest easy as the world

tumbles down into fire

for you did everything you could

& we didn't do enough. it was never

your fate to carry the failures of

common sense & education, but now

there's no one left to hold up the sky

before it crushes humanity like a

well-placed punch to the windpipe. after all,

that's how it felt when i woke up the next morning

& saw our country baptized in blood; it isn't

Jesus's name that's being

preached or prayed to now. all we can do is

scream into the void & hope

someone cares enough to answer.

madame,

please forgive us

for it is not you who failed us

but we who failed you.

i'm sorry

we didn't have enough courage

to save ourselves.
