Family

I showed my grandmother my keyboard

she took six years' of lessons when she was younger.

Her fingers found the keys -

she could still read -

just enough

just a little.

I pulled out my flute-piano duet book

she found fumbling chords and shaky notes

I played the way I play

not my best

it didn't have to be.

We played together

my grandfather singing

humming along

this is what makes music so special.

It's fun by yourself

but it brings people together

sharing it with people you love.

It connected my grandma

with her weathered hands on the keys

playing along when she knew how to

somehow always staying on track

to me

the intermediate.

"So this is what you do now"

she said

"Music".

"Yes."

Your granddaughter

is a musician.

    You did;
