The Forest Has Been Here

The Forest has always been here.
It was here as the native people of this land came,
foraging, hunting, taking only what they needed.
Here when the Europeans came,
bringing hate, devastation, destruction.
The forest has been here for
Hundreds
Thousands
Millions of years.
For every new age,
new era,
it has been here,
Surviving,
Watching,
Knowing.
The Forest has been here,
protecting,
As the mother raises her young,
as the ecosystems change and grow,
as we took and took.
The Forests have always been here,
helping others to survive,
only giving.
The forest has been here since the beginning,
and must last to the end.
And as the ones who only take,
we must give,
and protect the Forests, the Mountains, The Oceans,
Before it is too late.

  • alive

The stars are reflected in the glimmer of the headlamp's light on the snow

And the air is frozen-- it feels like the sensation of holding your hand under water so burning hot that

    it begins to feel cold

    somehow.

  • November

    A day as grey as

    the clouds above it

And the hills, which have changed from green to orange to purple to a deepest blue in the fading light

with a few bursts of yellow from the beech trees, holding on in their marcescence

  • pondering

If life is full of the little things

like skating on smooth black ice and laughing with a friend

then I have nothing to look forward to

because there is good in every day.
