Good Things

flames of love leap high
'neath a star spangled sky
while the moon ignores
and the planets are mere passerbys

the coals of life are glowing
somewhere beneath the ground
the plants are all rejoicing
a truly wonderful sound

you and I are laughing
young and spry and bright
happy as two can be
sing'n
gosh, this is the life

the clouds hold in their tears
not wanting to drench us to the bone
but they've had a pretty bad day
and soon wer're running home

hands over heads
and giggles on tongues
soaking and dripping
all the way home

your hair smells like rain
mine does too
I make us hot chocolate
my own special brew

with extra marshmallows
we sit by the fire
still dripping all over the floor
you ask me a question
then ask me once more

thinking I didn't hear
but I heard
i heard every word
I just wanted savor them
let them sit in my ears

let them dance
let them sing
till it's near midnight
and my ears start to ring

from all the good things
that you've told me.

    Looming over your shoulders

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Every moment that hurt

    Each minute that lingered longer

  • Inadequacy

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
