Growing up in 6/8

My band conductor has always said that 6/8 plays itself -

it does.

It's easy to just play through but not if you think too much.

I grew up in 6/8

my life plays itself

yes I make mistakes

yes I go offscipt but

we were all in sixth grade and now we're in eighth

and how did that happen?

We grew up in a song that tells you how it should be

that lays everything out simple

but we started to overthink it.

When TV show character's names substituted for cursing turned back into swears

when boys who were just our friends started having crushes on us

then started drifting apart

when the bond of running around at hangouts became awkward

stretched

forced

and didn't hold through the year...

we still talk sometimes.

We're all split up though.

We grew up in 6/8 and thought the world was our playground and now it isn't.

Now it's all serious.

Growing up in 6/8 was transformative...

  • Falling in love

The first thing I ever understood about falling in love

is that it keeps you coming back

    like magnets

whether it's good for you or bad for you

    you're addicted.

And I didn't know the scope of it -

  • New Year

    New year's resolutions.

I tell myself a lot of things every year -

    I never listen.

    No boys, no distractions.

    Too late.

This time is different I think -

    I want that senior solo

    Chairs

    straightbacked for posture perfection

    in neat rows

arranged up each step of the staggered blue-carpeted levels

    sneakers and boots rooted

    to the tiled floor
