A heart

a heart is like a raspberry
tempting and beautiful
but often tangled in a thick clump of thorns
it's hard to reach through those thorns
they prick your fingers and dig into your skin until you cry out in pain
a heart is like a glass vase
sometimes it's empty
shoved in the back of a dusty cupboard
and sometimes it's overflowing with bright red poppies
and elegant white gardenias
either way
It's so easily shattered
with one wrong word
or a lack of balance
a heart is like a rock
unbudging and stubborn
it takes a great amount of effort to move
sometimes turns out to be not as worth it as you thought
but on rare occasions
when you finally crack the rock of a heart open
you find the most beautiful geode
wildly colored and shining as bright as the sun
and that hurts the most when you lose it.

    Looming over your shoulders

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Every moment that hurt

    Each minute that lingered longer

  • Inadequacy

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
