The house on third street—chapter four: A new world

Max’s grip tightened, fingers trembling. “Emily is gone. Payton just—”

He swallowed. “—just vanished.”

His voice dropped, raw now.

“I am not losing you too.”

“Then come with me”

“But what about mum” he begged “you know what she’s going through after dad—“ he looked down “she can’t lose us too” he said shakily, joking act all gone.

“And neither can their families. That’s why I have to go. You can stay if you want. But I’m going”

His jaw tightened “I’m going with you”

They grabbed each other’s hands “we’ll be back in time for dinner” she reassured

Max nodded then they walked in together.

The darkness warped around them, and a small amount of red light leaked through the darkness and hit their skin

Payton was there in front of them he turned “you idiots” he said “I’m glad to see you—“ he ran up and hugged them both “—but you absolute idiots”

“What?” Felicity asked

“City, — Maximillian, once you’re in here you can’t get out— the exit. It’s gone”

Max’s eyes widened as he shoved Payton off and pulled Felicity away.

“No, we can’t be here forever. We need to be home for mom— dad just died we can’t—“ his voice broke off “it’s all that stupid dogs fault”

Felicity turned “it’s my fault, I should’ve had you stay. I should’ve just not have told you—“

“It’s not your fault” Max butted in, “and we will be home for dinner. I told mom I’d help set the table”

Payton looked down and grabbed the sides of his brown hair tangled around his fingers in uneven layers, longer at the back, like he’d never bothered to tame it.

“If I had been with Emily, I shouldn’t have said to enter this house. No wonder no one is here” he said

“You scared the dog away, so we could get away. All we need to do is find Emily” Felicity said

“City’s right—“

“It’s Felicity” Max interrupted

They both glared at him

He rolled his eyes “fine. Payton, continue”

“City’s right we need to—“

“It’s Felicity” max repeated.

“Shut up Max” Felicity said impatiently

He became quiet and started brooding, Felicity pat his back but he turned away  she groaned “Maxie, I’m sorry” she said then awkwardly hugged him.

Payton grinned at how close they were, even in a bad situation like this.

“She’s right, we need to not panic and find Emily whatever’s happening here—“ a sound of scampering footprints and a blur of white

“All of the sudden I want to uhh go somewhere else” Max said, putting himself in front of his sister and Payton.
