I feel sick

Renee Good just wanted to go home

To her kids

6, 12, and 15

I've watched the video

I didn't want to

But I needed to see for myself if she really tried to run the agent over

She didn't

She tried to turn around and go home

He got right in front of her car and shot her

He walked in front of her car

She wasn't moving forward

He could have walked away and let her go home

To have dinner with her family

But he shot her

He swore at her

And he said "No."

When a doctor asked if he could make sure she had a pulse

She was covered in blood

She is dead

Her kids lost their mother

I feel sick

I can't stop shaking

I am repulsed

By ICE

By all of these uneducated people who were handed guns and told they could take over

I live in this town

My house is blocks from the shooting

I feel sick

What has become of the beautiful city I call home?

My city is beautiful because we love immigrants

We have the largest Somali population and Hmong population in the country

We are a haven for all types of people, no matter where you were born

This is not who we are

This is just ICE

ICE stands firmly against everything we are

To quote the mayor, "Get the fuck out of our city"

  • Transition

My younger cousin put it best, I think.

"Spring is my favorite season, because it has a little bit of everything!"

    Rain, sun, clouds.

    Cold, cool, warm.

    Melting snow.

    Yellow daffodils.

    Baby birds.

  • A new daffodil

I've been buried for so long.

By dead leaves, snow, and the weight of winter's thick, cold air.

All of it holding me down.

    For months I stayed stagnant.

    Unable to move.

  • Weird

My name is Leah, I’m 12, and I’m weird. My mom says it’s not me, it’s just everyone else and they’re still growing up, but if I’m the odd one out, I’m pretty sure it’s just me.
