I Know How Pluto Feels

I think we're like the Milky Way.

Through the vastness of space we found us

and built friendships.

We grew a galaxy

and we've had different stars and planets

moons and rings come and gone.

We were a spiral galaxy

many strands of sparkling debris joining to make the dark a little brighter.

It was beautiful.

But the universe is ever-changing

and I was the first to go.

I am a comet flung from the center point

discarded and left to float aimlessly

through the many solar systems.

I came to rest on Pluto for a while

but you spotted me from your seat on the sun

and I knew I should leave and return to the stars.

I've made acquaintance with other dwarf planets

and some stars from old systems

that seem to shine a little brighter for me as I pass.

Their planets like my shiny tail

and the legends I leave behind

but they never deign to let me stay as a fixture in their skies.

From the edge of the galaxy I can see it all unfold

and I hope that soon

Andromeda will come to break the veil.

Maybe then I'll have my freedom

with new systems to explore

but for now I visit Pluto

to talk of things that were before.
