the journal

i have always journaled,

ever since i was 6.

sure back then my entries were just doodles of my day,

but it still helped me convey my emotions.

i was at the shop with my mom,

when my gaze landed upon this beautiful navy blue leather book,

with a curious manner,

i picked it up,

'the 5 minute journal'

it read in gold letters.

all i could think about is the worksheets i'd do with my counselor,

it reminded me exactly of that.

i showed it to my mom,

my mom said yes,

and i got the journal.

it starts with a quote,

and a placeholder for the owner's name.

then,

the first placeholder for the first entry.

the way it works is

i write in it every morning before school,

then after school i write about my day.

it's the same thing every time,

but each morning,

i get a quote.

and at the end of each day,

i get another quote.

  • chokehold

my rights are in a chokehold,

gasping for the air they once were able to breathe in deep.

the air that made them feel so free,

like a bird in the great open sky,

or a puppy full of sweet little dreams.
