Moments like These

It's moments like these, moments I want to freeze.

Running around barefoot in the yard with my siblings and a Nerf football, though only my brother can throw a spiral.

The smell of pertrichor filling our lungs, and our overenergetic puppy chasing our feet. Thunder crashing in our ears, lightning hitting on the horizon.

It's about to pour rain, but we don't care.

Then dropping to the porch with our mom, waiting to race each other across the yard and to the gate to get the package the mailman was supposed to deliver.

Raindrops begin to tap onto our roof and across our legs. The mailman drives past our house, getting lost in the endless country.

We wait outside for a few more moments, unwilling to leave the fresh air.

Then we ball up inside, while the rain really hits. We have to drag the puppy back inside as hail rains from the heavens, and we watch as Mom's flowers get pelted with water from the rooftop.

The mailman is still lost out there, and our package never came. I don't really mind.

My sister and I make cookies, spilling flour everywhere and asking for help every second or three. I don't really mind.

Then the internet goes out, and my dad loses connection to his work, and he comes home early. Of course, I don't really mind.

Oh, how I wish I could go back and freeze myself in that moment.
