My Name/Your Name

cover my eyes so i can see you better

my night shadow, cloaked in delicious mystery,

your hand, forbidden fruit, holding mine

under the waning light of a summer's day.

i wish

to drown with you, legs tangled in riverbank-muck

and water weeds, and yet breathe

deeper than i ever have.

to exist within hours lit

by the boyish effervescence that still clings to you

like the day's last hours of warmth, by your voice

when it speaks languages i'm beginning to understand.

when it calls my name.

your name.

i wish to run my hands through your hair

and feel your heart

as it patters against my cheek, insistent, and whisper

nobody knows.

nobody will ever understand

such wonder

as us, something fleeting and yet eternal,

hidden within birdsong and sobs.

shall i find no other?

I remember taking Polaroids with you

In the driveway of the house you’ve now sold

On a grey afternoon that looked like night

In the photos. We’d wait impatiently

  • Stained-glass girl

you should be an image in stained-glass windows

the same ones you trace with your eyes every sunday

while hymns echo in your ears, words

you've known so long you forget the meaning.

or you belong in a portrait

  • Lavender and Gardenias

Her room smelled of lavender and gardenias

As we lay under silky rays of sun

And danced around the truth in long, snaking sentences,

Words falling over one another until they

    Became nothing, only syllables
